The various types of sofa that you need to know before buying yours
Some concrete examples to help you better choose the ideal sofa.
Whether the house has a small living room or a large living area, it will certainly not be complete without a comfortable sofa.
But there are so many sofas and extricating yourself in choosing the most suitable sofa for the space you have, can prove to be a difficult choice.
Although the construction of a sofa has changed little in the last thirty years, over time the shape of the sofa has changed, adhering more and more to the needs and fashions of modern living.
Let’s see together some of the best known types of sofas on the market today. The most common shapes, the peculiar characteristics of each style and shape, to guide our choice first on the genre and then on the model and design that’s right for us.
Without ever forgetting that in addition to personal taste and needs, one must never overlook the dimensions and the constraints given by the space in which the sofa will be inserted.
The linear sofas
Vintage 2 or 3 seater linear sofa. Original and easy to manage.
They can really be placed in any kind of living room, but they can also find space in other areas of the house such as a large bedroom or a large kitchen. Enveloping and comfortable, while remaining compact, they can have the most traditional of shapes, but also be vintage, or, for example, have particular workmanship (capitonnè), as in the case of the Chester model.
A timeless model, available in different sizes and now proposed with infinite variations in both materials and colours. This sofa model fits very well both in classic furnishing solutions and in more modern and contemporary solutions.
If chosen vintage or in any case with a leather finish – the most classic – it restores great charm and personality to the room.
Modern/traditional linear sofa if you want to play it safe in the comfort factor
Among the most common types of sofas, those that refer to tradition (while still looking modern) combine good comfort with an easy interpretation of the space. With sizes that vary according to the models, between 160 and 240 cm in length, they are now offered in a truly wide range that ranges from the most classic and enveloping solutions to the most contemporary ones.
Traditional linear sofa with base down to the ground
Available with all kinds of finishes (from leather to fabric) and with various workmanships, they are perfect as a starting point for easily organizing a medium-sized living room (about 30 square metres) if well organized with a pouf, a coffee table and a nice carpet, they immediately give life to a comfortable and welcoming area.
Some are equipped with the very comfortable relax movement that allows you to stretch your legs and by lowering the backrest you can also support your back comfortably. The maximum is obtained with the headrest movement to support the neck and relax the cervical muscles.

Modern / minimal linear sofa or unstructured if you need to optimize the little space
Characterized by small, unstructured and linear dimensions, the most modern and contemporary sofa models can have extremely minimal and essential shapes.
The linear sofa can be placed anywhere in the house, in the center of the room to define a conversation area or against the wall in front of the TV or fireplace.
They combine aesthetics and functionality well and can also find space in small living areas, characterizing them with great quality.
The deconstructed sofas
Modular, simple, linear, the deconstructed and modular sofa is perfect if you have a large and “free” living area. It is among the sofas one of the most interesting, but also one of the most insidious. To be bought by first testing its practicality, and avoiding improvising with gatherings of cushions by making similar sofas, because in the long run they can only be more uncomfortable than a traditional sofa and perhaps even less original. The juxtaposed elements can also be chosen with different shapes to change and reciprocate on different occasions.
Often infinitely modular, it should be organized considering the size of the space where it will be inserted. If you want to create something interesting, you should opt for at least 2/3 modules to be enriched with cushions as desired.
Dynamic in appearance and practical to move, it will be the right model if you like to change the conformation of the environment; for example, during a party it will be easier to take it apart and leave the space in front completely free.
SOFAS WITH CHAISE LONGUE
Sofa with chaise longue if you want something comfortable.
It is the main variant of the linear sofa.
Structured like a 3-seater but with an element with an extended seat, they allow, in most cases, to fully stretch out the legs.
The length of the chaise longue varies depending on the model, but generally does not exceed cm. 180 and is usually placed next to a wall that does not exceed 2 meters. It can also be placed in the center of the room, when the spaces allow for easy movement around.
I DIVANI AD ANGOLO
L-shaped sofa to settle a corner and divide rooms
Particularly suitable for contemporary homes, characterized by open space living rooms that also include the kitchen, it stands out for its strong vocation for conviviality. The “L” shape also makes this sofa suitable for being placed against the wall and creating a cozy corner for large families or many friends.
Sofa with liftable back
Sofa with low movable backrest (newly designed) if you need something that divides the space
It can also find a place in small rooms but it is preferable in fairly large situations. It is double-sided, that is, equipped with cushions and seats on both sides and characterized by a low back. If necessary, it also becomes a comfortable bed.
Obviously it is a sofa that does not have to be placed near the walls but that finds its place in the center of the room. Interesting and useful if you are looking for a sofa model that divides two rooms or creates a visual filter between two areas of the same space.
